Art Hounds: Art from the missed photograph
Two shows this month combine visual art and writing: Charles Matson Lume’s light-based art draws inspiration from Minnesota poets, and Rebecca Pavlenko focuses on the photos “that got away.” Plus, The MN Songwriter Showcase brings veteran and emerging singers together twice a week to perform.
Art Hounds: Dance set to poetry and ghosts of the season
Katha Dance Theatre collaborates with J.D. Steele in a cross-cultural performance about equality. Also an appreciation for Minneapolis rock band Annie and the Bang Bang’s new record, and the Commonweal Theatre opens its run of “A Christmas Carol” with women playing the ghosts and Scrooge.
Art Hounds recommend shows that celebrate glamorous, artistic lives
The Sound Unseen Music + Film Festival ends with “Being Bebe” about drag performer Bebe Zahara Benet. At Bryant Lake Bowl, Mistress Ginger tells the stories of Hollywood stars such as Mae West and Marlene Dietrich. And Qui Nguyen’s Dungeon and Dragons comedy “She Kills Monsters” inaugurates in-person performances at a University of Minnesota venue in the Twin Cities.
Art Hounds: Dance meditation considers movement across borders
Ananya Dance Theatre performs “Dastak: I Wish You Me” for an in-person audience at O’Shaughnessy in St. Paul. Other Art Hounds picks — a puppetry extravaganza that teaches Cherokee and a “private conversation” through mixed media in Fergus Falls.
Art Hounds: A dose of natural beauty, a pinch of Halloween horror
Wildlife photographer Dudley Edmondson captures the beauty of northern Minnesota’s waters. Art Hounds also recommend two one-act shows running through Halloween which make audiences question reality.
Art Hounds: Three concerts in old and new spaces
Singer-songwriter Mary Bue performs at the Landmark Center in downtown St. Paul; Guns N’ Rosenkavalier combines opera with rock music at the historic Sheldon Theatre in Red Wing; and a cappella group Tonic Sol Fa stops at the new CTC Center in Pillager.
Art Hounds: Relax and enjoy the show
Art Hounds recommend shows to sit back and relax with on a fall weekend: “Beer & Ballet” in Bloomington and Sweet Jazz in Northfield. Or, get in the Halloween spirit with the book launch celebration of “The Haunting of Potter’s Field” in Winona.
Art Hounds: Comedy on the farm and in town
“Arla Mae’s Booyah Wagon” brings the comedy — and the stew — in their multi-farm show tour. Plus, a quadruple album release show in St. Paul and themed comedy nights in Minneapolis.
Art Hounds 'hunt' for artists in Rochester
Artists open gallery spaces for the public to explore in Rochester’s Hiding Artists Tour. This week’s Art Hounds also recommend exhibits by Barbara McIlrath and Stuart Loughridge at the Groveland Gallery in Minneapolis, and by Kelly Schamberger at the Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery in Grand Marais.
