Art Hounds recommend photography on the struggle for racial justice
The Art Hounds suggest a visit to photojournalist KingDemetrius Pendleton’s exhibit “The Movement Never Stops” at Block Portrait Studios in St. Paul. Connect with the healing powers of art and nature in J.G. Everest’s immersive Sound Garden at Riverside Park in Minneapolis. Have a laugh over “Much Ado About Nothing” by Fearless Comedy Productions, in its final weekend at the historic Mounds Theatre.
Art Hounds recommend folk music and international film
The Ukrainian Village Band uses their Easter European folk music to raise awareness and funds for Ukraine. Minneapolis’s Pooja Goswami Pavan sings ballads of love and harmony written during tumultuous times. The Minneapolis St. Paul Film Festival launches at the refurbished St. Anthony Main Theatre along with other Minnesota venues.
Art Hounds describe when art forms collide and complement each other
Autumn Cavender’s exhibit “Wowicakekage: Dakota Art Encoded” in Granite Falls finds the connections between Dakota quillwork and glitch art. The 21st annual Red Wing Poet Arts Collaboration asks artists to illustrate a poem. The Midwest Music Fest rocks multiple venues in Winona Friday and Saturday.
Art Hounds: Art studios open for spring visitors and a musical stages in a car dealership
The weather may be more like winter, but one spring art tour commences this weekend in the Driftless Region with the Bluff Country Studio Art Tour. In Zumbrota, Art Hounds recommend the book launch-concert for Becky Schlegel’s “The Lullaby Collection.” And, Minneapolis Musical Theater stages “Hands on a Hardbody,” about vying to win a new truck, at a Roseville auto dealer.
Art Hounds: Creative work abounds this spring
The University of Minnesota/Guthrie Theater BFA class of ‘22 take to the stage after a pandemic hiatus with the farce “The School for Lies.” Cecilia Rolando’s bright paintings light up the walls at the Front Porch Coffee & Tea Co. in Ely. And it’s the final weekend for the new, intergenerational play “The Family Line” from Stage North at the Capri Theater.
Art Hounds celebrate milestones of life
Jim Denomie’s exhibit “Sweet Dreams” in Stillwater is a tribute to the artist, who passed away in March. The Rochester Chamber Music Society celebrates jazz musician and composer John Paulson with a free concert. Minneapolis songwriter Jesse Norell releases his concept album “Aorta Borealis” about his daughter. 
Art Hounds: Classical music from around the world, and from the world of video games
On this week’s Art Hounds: Renowned pipa player Gao Hong of Northfield celebrates 50 years of performing with friends at the Ordway. The six-player band Maithree uses traditional Indian instruments to celebrate “the music of friendship.” The Video Games and Music Convention in Minneapolis offers two days of live music and a chance to jam to video game tunes.
Art Hounds: Iron Range musicians jam and a new theater company opens in St. Paul
Art Hounds this week recommend you check out: The Mariah Theatre Company opening in St. Paul with the debut of Patrick Coyle’s play, “The Big Blue River;” a showcase of Iron Range musicians at the Ore House in Gilbert; and a surreal exhibit of thrift store furniture at Gustavus Adolphus in St. Peter.
