Woodland Dunes keeps tabs on northern saw-whet owl
Woodland Dunes Nature Center & Preserve is hoping to get a bird's-eye view of migration patterns of the state's smallest owl. Volunteers are working to catch and band northern saw-whet owls - most of which grow to no more than 8 inches in height - to help with research occurring in the Midwest.
The U.S. House was expected to vote as early as Friday on the measure, which comes as the EPA is preparing to release its own regulations of ship ballast - a leading culprit in the spread of invaders such as zebra and quagga mussels in the Great Lakes and ocean coastal waters.
The lawsuit contends an environmental assessment completed earlier this year by the Fish and Wildlife Service was not adequate. That review found no environmental risk to planting genetically modified crops on refuges.
