Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton has hosted his first Governor's Deer Hunting Opener. But he won't be shooting any deer.
Dayton says he's a bird - not a deer - hunter. He held the first Governor's Pheasant Opener this fall.
On Friday, Dayton continued the tradition started by his predecessor, Tim Pawlenty, and hosted the ninth annual Governor's Deer Opener, this time in Biwabik on northeastern Minnesota's Iron Range.
This year's Governor's Deer Opener was held at the Giants Ridge ski resort and golf facility. Events included a "Big Buck" luncheon at the lodge and an archery match for students.
The Mesabi Daily News reports Dayton told a group of about 200 students he was proud of them, and signed autographs.
Minnesota's firearms deer season opens Saturday.
