Snow expected in SE Minnesota through afternoon
A Winter Weather Advisory continues for parts of southeast Minnesota, including the city of Rochester. The advisory extends into parts of central and north central Wisconsin through this evening.
Southeast MN to accumulate several inches of snow, but sideswipe the Twin Cities
The much watched weather system has kicked into gear and was producing a nice area of snow, mixed with rain at times, across southeast Minnesota and into Wisconsin this morning. The infrared satellite image was showing some enhanced cloud tops over southern Minnesota, which supports snow continuing for much of the day around Rochester, where…
Rain expected to change to snow; cold temperatures on the way
It seems that there would be no problem this far north, this late in December, to expect snow over rain, but the climate it is a-changin’. A steady rain fell much of the day over the landscape of central and southern Minnesota. It was even raining as far north as Crane Lake late this afternoon. If…
A gray afternoon with cold rain south and light snow northeast
Snow fell overnight and early this morning in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin. Overall, snow accumulations were on the order of 1 to 4 inches. The greatest accumulation, 6. 5 inches, was reported three miles north of Butternut in Ashland County, Wisconsin. Other snowfall totals for the area can be viewed by clicking here. Occasional light snow is…

Three to 3.5 inches of snow were reported at Seeley (Sawyer County, Wis.) and Butternut (Ashland County, Wis.). Overnight, the light rain changed back to snow in northeast Minnesota. Snow cover…

There seems to be slightly better news for holiday travelers next week. The latest forecast model trends bring a slightly warmer system in Monday. That could be enough to keep precipitation mostly as rain Monday, with a change to wet sloppy snow showers Monday night into Tuesday into Christmas Eve on Wednesday.
The latest models runs, and shifts in some larger atmospheric "oscillations" suggest next week's storm could deepen and become a significant snow maker for Minnesota and the Upper Midwest.
Quiet through Sunday, mixed precip next week
Moderating temps, dry weather and generally clear roads should hold though Sunday. A mixed bag of rain, sleet and snow could pose some travel issues from Monday into Christmas Eve.
2014: Warmest globally, Minnesota’s coldest in 18 years
I’ve been talking with MPR Climate Cast contributor University of St. Thomas Professor John Abraham this week about what it will take for 2014 to “officially” be declared the warmest year on record globally. John is at the American Geophysical Union conference in San Francisco this week. John and I traded data including the National Oceanic and…
