High school football team switches topics amid pandemic, protests

Outdoor games and scrimmages for youth sports are back in Minnesota, along with full-team practices. In a normal year, this is a time when many high school athletes are looking ahead — playing on summer teams, starting captains’ practices and getting ready for the fall season.

But this year, so little has been normal. There’s the pandemic that has kept students away from school and sports. Then came the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, and the protests and riots that followed.

For students at Minneapolis South High School, the unrest happened right in their backyard. MPR News host Cathy Wurzer talked with rising senior Kader Diop and his football coach Rodney Lossow about how the team is processing recent events.
