Record TV deal reached for high school tournaments

The Minnesota State High School League has reached a record-sized TV deal with KSTC (Ch. 45) in the Twin Cities. It is worth about $20 million over 10 years. The station purchased the rights to broadcast high school tournaments in football, boys and girls hockey, and boys and girls basketball starting in 2005. The league also announced that it signed an agreement with the parent company of the Minnesota Wild to market some of the tournaments that will be held at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Morning Edition substitute host Perry Finelli spoke with David Stead, executive director of the Minnesota State High School League.

Hall of Famer Carl Eller directs his speech to African-American men

Former Minnesota Viking and University of Minnesota defensive lineman Carl Eller is now a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Eller was inducted yesterday at a ceremony in Canton, Ohio. During his speech Eller did not dwell the glory days of the Purple People Eaters. Instead, he talked about the future. Eller, who has worked with recovering drug addicts in the Twin Cities, spoke about the need to help young African-American males participate fully in society.

Minnesota Thunder kicks around in new home field

One of the events on Mexico's President Vicente Fox agenda during his visit to the Twin Cities is a meeting with players from Minnesota's pro soccer team, the Minnesota Thunder. It's a prelude to the Thunder's game just hours later against one of Mexico's top teams, Club Morelia. The teams play a special exhibition game at James Griffin Stadium. The stadium at Central High School in St. Paul is the Thunder's new home field -- a relocation the Thunder hopes will expand its fan base.

After shooting 4-of-16 for 11 points in the first five games of the Western Conference finals, Kareem Rush scored a career playoff-high 18 on six 3-pointers in Game 6, leading the Los Angeles Lakers to a 96-90 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday night.

Martin provides unlikely spark as Timberwolves tie series with Lakers

Even without injured Sam Cassell, the Minnesota Timberwolves had the energy and attitude to even the Western Conference finals. Kevin Garnett scored 24 points and Darrick Martin had 15 points and six assists in place of Cassell, leading the Timberwolves to a 89-71 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 2 Sunday night.

The Minnesota Timberwolves lost to the Los Angeles Lakers Friday night at the Target Center 97-88. The team also lost the momentum it had after its series ending win against Sacramento. And they lost home court advantage. But Wolves players say the team has been in this situation before and they say can come back.
