MPR News Update

Good morning! Sunny and warmer today, with highs in the upper 60s to mid-70s. Let this be a reminder that if you or your kid get an invitation, you should show up for a child's birthday party if you can. Graham Day turned 8 on Sunday and his parents did what parents of 8-year-olds often do when kids turn 8: They planned a party, sent out invitations, and then baked and stocked up on food. Nobody showed up, the Dallas Morning News reports. Nobody. It's not the first time. It happened when he turned 6, too. Thankfully, there's still some good in the world. Day's mother asked local police officers if one would mind stopping by. The entire shift showed up. So did firefighters and a few neighbors. | Forecast | Updraft weather blog
Jury selection started Tuesday in the trial of St. Anthony officer Jeronimo Yanez. Fifty possible jurors were given a questionnaire to fill out asking 60 questions ranging from basic demographics to the potential juror's experience with law enforcement, crime or any of the main parties involved in the case. Tomorrow, attorneys on both sides will start to whittle the jury down to 15 people. | Podcast: 74 Seconds | Forecast
Good morning. When their club started in 2010, the last men of Luverne bought a bottle of hooch and 24 mugs. When there was only one left, he'd toast the other 23, all veterans of World War II. Only the aged can reveal the loneliness of losing all of your friends, and nobody really likes drinking alone anyway. So the three remaining vets aren't going to wait. | To many Americans, Memorial Day has lost its meaning | Memorial Day dos and don'ts | Forecast
Good afternoon! Out of the "Because it's Friday" file - a bicyclist who has been hit a few times while riding in New York went big when supplementing his bicycle bell. The new horn did scare a few pedestrians, but at least they got out of the way. | NewsCut | Forecast
Good morning! Clouds will be moving in on a clear morning but the weather should stay warm across Minnesota with highs in the low 70s once again. Mayo Clinic has one of the rare full-time positions for a carillonneur, someone who plays the bells in a bell tower. Twenty-four-year-old Austin Ferguson just took the position and now takes requests via Twitter. He'll also be taking requests via this MPR News poll. Cast your vote and check out MPR News' Facebook page at 4:40 p.m. today for a special Facebook Live with Ferguson. | Forecast
Good afternoon. What's it take to get out of having a measles shot in Minnesota? Perhaps less than you think. Just 95 current kindergartners weren't vaccinated for a medical reason. But almost 2,000 skipped the needle just because their parents didn't want them vaccinated. And despite pushes to tighten state vaccine policy, Minnesota lawmakers have shown little inclination to change anything. | More on MPR News
Good afternoon! Whenever inhumanity defines a day on the planet, Mr. Rogers makes a reappearance to a new generation, reminding us to "look for the helpers - because if you look for the helpers, then you'll know there's hope." Today is, again, one of those days, writes MPR News blogger Bob Collins. | NewsCut | Forecast
Good morning! Cloudy with scattered showers today. Highs in the 50s to 60s. It was a long day yesterday for Minnesota lawmakers but not long enough. Legislators missed a deadline for completing their year's work and transitioned straight into a special session Tuesday to complete work on a $46 billion two-year budget. Republican legislative leaders and DFL Gov. Mark Dayton announced they had reached a tentative agreement on the budget that they didn't have enough time to pass Monday. Dayton called lawmakers back into session at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday with the understanding that they would pass their remaining budget bills later Tuesday and adjourn by 7 a.m. Wednesday. | Forecast | Updraft weather blog
Good afternoon! Have you started to notice that a fruit or vegetable you used to be able to eat now makes your lips and mouth tingle? You're not going crazy, you're experiencing what's called Oral Allergy Syndrome (or OAS). People who have OAS are allergic to plant pollens and many fruits and vegetables contain proteins that are similar to these pollens. It can come on suddenly and often goes undiagnosed. | Forecast
Good afternoon! A morbidly obese wild monkey - nicknamed "Uncle Fat" - has been captured by wildlife officials in Thailand, and promptly put on a strict diet. He is an example of why people shouldn't feed wild monkeys unhealthy food, officials said. | Forecast
