Morning Edition: Music

The series is part of what Young is calling his Big M Theater Tour — a short solo tour played in historic theaters in cities that begin with "M," including Minneapolis, Milwaukee and Madison.
Sixty years later, remembering 'The Day the Music Died'
Sixty years ago this week, the Winter Dance Party concert tour was crisscrossing Minnesota and neighboring states, featuring Ritchie Valens, J.P. "the Big Bopper" Richardson and Buddy Holly. Then came "The Day the Music Died."
The song actually came about after the band broke up, when several former Yes members got together to form another band, called Cinema. Their new guitarist had written "Owner of a Lonely Heart" as a demo.
The first EP from the Twin Cities-based singer and poet was released earlier this month. The five-song collection is called "Nur," which means "light" in Arabic. Pitchfork described it as "a superb show of control, lean except when it decides to lash out."
According to an analysis by University of Minnesota librarian Shane Nackerud, the winning song is "Not the Kid," by Communist Daughter. He calculates the song has been played 541 times since 2009.
Artist Max Siedentopf has incorporated the song into a new installation in the Namib desert, using an MP3 player connected to six speakers. He told the BBC that he "wanted to pay the song the ultimate homage and physically exhibit 'Africa' in Africa."
