Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliott is proposing major changes to public safety in the Twin Cities suburb, nearly a month after the fatal police shooting of Daunte Wright during a traffic stop. Elliott told residents at a meeting Saturday that his proposal would "add more tools to our toolbox to appropriately respond when members of our community are in grave need." A federal grand jury has indicted the four former Minneapolis police officers involved in George Floyd's killing last year on criminal civil rights charges. The indictment charges Derek Chauvin, Thomas Lane, J. Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao with violating George Floyd's civil rights. Also, outdoor mask requirements ease in Minnesota, along with other restrictions. Gov. Tim Walz on Thursday laid out his timeline for ending COVID-19 restrictions — including the end of curbs in time for Memorial Day weekend — serving notice that the pandemic’s end is near. The attorney for Derek Chauvin filed a motion Tuesday seeking a new trial for the former Minneapolis police officer, who was convicted of murder last month in the death of George Floyd. The motion cites 10 reasons Chauvin should be granted a new trial, including judicial abuse of discretion over granting a change of venue and sequestering the jury before deliberations.
