Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey announced a sweeping set of public safety proposals Monday that he said would make all neighborhoods in the city safe, while increasing transparency and holding police officers accountable. The proposals are months in the making, Frey said, but were announced Monday after a particularly violent weekend during which a 9-year-old girl was shot in the head while jumping on a trampoline in a north Minneapolis neighborhood.

Former Brooklyn Center police officer Kim Potter, the officer charged with second-degree manslaughter for fatally shooting 20-year-old Black motorist Daunte Wright, is scheduled to appear in court via videoconference Monday. Potter, who is white, has an omnibus hearing, also known as a pretrial hearing, on Monday afternoon in Hennepin County District Court. The purpose of such a hearing is to go over evidence and determine if there's probable cause for the case to proceed.

Minnesota will end its statewide mask-wearing order on Friday following new guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention allowing people who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to stop wearing masks, Gov. Tim Walz said Thursday. Calling it a great day for Minnesota, the governor continued to plead with unvaccinated Minnesotans to get their shots to help hold back the spread of COVID-19.

The trial of three former Minneapolis police officers charged with aiding and abetting murder in the killing of George Floyd has been postponed until March. A Hennepin County judge overseeing the case ruled that the trial, originally scheduled for August, should be delayed to give time for the three officers to be tried on separate and more serious federal charges. Hennepin County District Judge Peter Cahill has found aggravating factors that would justify a tougher sentence for Derek Chauvin, including treating George Floyd with “cruelty” that resulted in his “slow death.” The former Minneapolis police officer was convicted of murder and manslaughter last month in Floyd’s killing.
