Birds' greatest urban predator: The city skyline
Audubon Minnesota is in its fifth year of research looking into how many birds are being killed by flying into buildings and what can be done to reduce the number. In the Twin Cities, Audubon Minnesota collected 1,400 dead birds from 2007 to 2009, representing 100 different species -- mostly songbirds.
The decision is the latest in a longstanding dispute between the city of Minneapolis and two pension funds -- the Minneapolis Police Relief Association and the Minneapolis Firefighters Relief Association. City leaders have complained the fund overpayments were straining city coffers.
Home prices keep dropping in Twin Cities, but news isn't all bad
The Twin Cities had the unfortunate distinction in March of having the biggest home price decline in the Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller Home Price Index. Real estate experts say the numbers reflect continued weakness in the metro area's housing market. But they also caution against reading too much into the price decline.
One week later, services trickle in for tornado victims
It's been a week since a tornado devastated a wide swath of north Minneapolis and families are coming out of shock and taking the first few steps to put their lives back together. Yet many are still waiting for services and funds that will only come once a federal disaster area is declared.
