A school in Arlington, Minn., is leading the way to show how institutions might extend the season for local food -- by freezing it. But the labor is intensive and financial savings are uncertain.
Researchers today will visit the Iron Range to share findings of their study into possible links between asbestos exposure in taconite mines and the deadly lung disease, mesothelioma. More than 80 former miners have died from the rare cancer. For more than five years, researchers have been trying to determine whether exposure to dust in the mines and processing plants makes workers more vulnerable -- not only to mesothelioma but to other respiratory diseases.
As plows remove snow and exposed a melted layer of snow beneath, the blowing cold air quickly freezes it. That's what has quickly created the icy conditions.
A mix of rain, sleet and snow fell over much of Minnesota Wednesday night and Thursday, bringing difficult conditions for driving, and even walking, in many parts of the state.

More than 70,000 utility customers in southwest Minnesota and eastern South Dakota were without power over the last 24 hours as freezing rain wreaked havoc with power lines and utility poles.
An ice storm has caused wide-spread power outages in southwest Minnesota. Transmission lines feeding power to the city of Worthington are down and the city has declared a state of emergency, giving officials the authority to coordinate relief efforts with state and federal agencies.
