What does Adam Levy think of the songs?
At the end of the Songs from Scratch process, songwriter Adam Levy listened to what our three musicians created and offered up his reflections on the project.
The musicians record their songs
Our three musicians have had two weeks to create a song using Adam Levy's lyrics as a starting point, and "The Wizard of Oz" as their inspiration. We check in as they finish up their songs.
The music of summer
Sunny days, warm breezes, and languid nights all make us think of summer, and so do certain songs. Midmorning takes a look at the great songs of summertime.
The musicians get the lyrics
Our project looks at the creative process of writing music, through the eyes of three musicians and a lyricist. We hear from the three bands -- Best Friends Forever, Jeremy Messersmith and rapper P.O.S. -- as they get the lyrics from Adam Levy, and begin shaping their songs.
Meet the lyricist
The source of musical inspiration is a subject we're exploring in a new edition of our Songs from Scratch project. We asked songwriter Adam Levy to compose some lyrics, and asked three musicians to create a song using them. Meet Adam Levy of the Honeydogs.
Cowboy Junkies revisited
More than 20 years have passed since these siblings formed their band and recorded the critically acclaimed "Trinity Sessions" album in an abandoned church. The songs acquire a new polish in a new recording. The Cowboy Junkies perform and talk about their music in MPR's Maud Moon Weyerhauser studio.
Film director celebrates 1994
While 1994 may not stick out in many people's minds as being one of the watershed years of U.S. history, it does for film director Jonathan Levine. "Much like 1776, just with more rap music," he says. It's the year he set his new film "The Wackness."
Minnesota International Piano e-Competition
If you have a fondness for piano music -- perhaps you play or once did, or maybe you're the parent of a budding young musician -- you might want to carve out some time this afternoon to catch the Semi-Final Round of the Minnesota International e-Piano Junior Competition. The first e-Comp took place in 2002 and has occurred every two years since, just like the Olympics. And, like this year's Olympic athletes, these musicians are from all over the world and playing at the top of their game.
