Aditya Harsono, the 34-year-old Marshall man who was detained by federal immigration authorities in March for allegedly overstaying his student visa, was released from custody today. 

Harsono walked out of the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building in Fort Snelling along with his wife, Peyton Harsono. He said he feels happy and excited to go home to his family back in Marshall and hold his daughter — as well as eat good food and get some sleep. 

“I just wanna say, thank you to everybody you helped me get out,” Harsono said. “I just wanna go home and thanks for all the support.”

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers arrested Harsono in March at his job at a hospital days after his student visa was revoked without his knowledge. Harsono had been in custody for almost two months at the Kandiyohi County Jail. 

Harsono came to the United States from Indonesia in 2015 as an undergraduate student at Southwest Minnesota State University. He has a misdemeanor conviction for criminal damage to property in 2022, but Harsono told MPR News he believed his arrest was in retaliation for participation in protests after the 2021 police killing of Daunte Wright in Brooklyn Center. 

He was arrested on suspicion of unlawful assembly at a protest, but the charge was later dismissed. 

A federal judge ordered Harsono’s release after finding his detainment violated his first amendment rights.
