The seven people charged with torturing and killing Minnesota native Sam Nordquist in New York state pleaded not guilty during court appearances Tuesday.

The suspects face charges including kidnapping and first-degree murder. WHAM-TV reports they remain in custody without bail pending their next court hearing in May.

Nordquist, who was 24, had traveled to New York last fall to meet a woman he met online — she’s among the suspects now charged in his death.

Nordquist lost contact with family earlier this year. His body was found in a field in western New York February. Authorities say he died after being confined and tortured for more than a month.
