President Donald Trump has nominated Minneapolis attorney Daniel Rosen to serve as the next U.S. attorney for Minnesota.
Rosen, who was one of three candidates recommended for the position by Minnesota’s Republican congressional delegation, will need to be confirmed by the Senate.
“I am honored to be nominated, and I look forward to the confirmation process,” Rosen told MPR News by phone on Wednesday.

Republican Reps. Tom Emmer, Brad Finstad, Michelle Fischbach and Pete Stauber issued a statement Wednesday calling Rosen “one of the sharpest legal minds in the entire country.”

Though he has not worked as a prosecutor, Rosen served as a defense attorney in a handful of criminal cases early in his career. Over more than 30 years as an attorney, he focused on commercial litigation in federal and state courts, particularly eminent domain matters.
In recommending Rosen to Trump, the GOP representatives wrote that he “has used his expertise to advocate for community and charitable issues, especially matters of particular interest to the American Jewish community.”
Rosen, a Republican, served for about seven years on the Minnesota Campaign Finance Board and as a board member of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas.
“We have Republicans, we have Democrats, we have independents on our board. We try to represent a cross section of the community,” said JCRC Executive Director Steve Hunegs. “Dan came from a certain perspective, but he was certainly very understanding of other perspectives in trying to find common ground.”
Rosen is a U.S. Navy veteran and graduate of the University of Minnesota Law School.
If confirmed, he’ll replace President Joe Biden’s appointee Andy Luger, who stepped down as U.S. attorney ahead of Trump’s inauguration.
“The United States Attorney’s Office in Minnesota is one of the premiere prosecutor’s offices in the country. I know that Mr. Rosen is a good lawyer and I look forward to meeting with him soon,” said DFL U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar in a separate statement.
Klobuchar sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee, which must approve Rosen’s nomination before it can advance to the full Senate.
“This is an important job—to uphold and enforce the law. I know that Mr. Rosen has a good reputation, and I look forward to meeting with him soon,” said DFL U.S. Sen. Tina Smith in her own statement.
Rosen’s nomination certificate lists him as a resident of Florida, where he’s lived for the past two years, but Rosen said he plans to move back to Minnesota if confirmed as U.S. Attorney.
“I am a lifelong Minnesotan, and I will be residing full time in Minnesota for this job,” Rosen said.
