Just looking at the overall temperature average, January looked normal.

“But it was all over the place,” meteorologist and climatologist Mark Seeley told MPR News host Cathy Wurzer.

Across the state on Jan. 18 to Jan. 20, much of the state saw extreme cold, with some places in northern Minnesota reaching daytime highs of only 20 degrees below zero.

And just a week later, Fairmont in the southern part of the state reached 58 degrees — “The highest temperature ever measured anywhere in Minnesota on Jan. 30,” Seeley said.

Wurzer spoke with Seeley about the wide temperature swings in their weekly weather chat. Listen to the full conversation by clicking the player above.
