January cold snap was challenging, not record-breaking

January saw intense cold across Minnesota, reaching 16 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit below normal temperatures this time of year.

It wasn’t anything the state hasn’t been through before.

“It was challenging. There’s no ifs, ands or buts,” climatologist and meteorologist Mark Seeley told MPR News host Cathy Wurzer.

January’s temperature dips set no new records for lows — but the bitter cold did set some daily high temperature records.

Park Rapids and Cass Lake in central Minnesota along with International Falls in northern Minnesota reached new daily highs of just 18 degrees below zero.

Wurzer spoke with Seeley about frigid temperatures in their weekly weather chat.
