On Aug. 1, it will become a felony to buy a gun for someone who’s not legally allowed to buy one. The toughened law goes into effect just as Fleet Farm stores are being sued by the state of Minnesota for not doing enough to stop illegal straw purchases.
An investigative report by Fox News 9’s Nathan O’Neal found six Fleet Farms across the Midwest, two of them in the Twin Cities, were flagged by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) after a high number of guns used in crimes were traced back to those stores.
Morning Edition host Cathy Wurzer spoke with O’Neal about what the federal authorities discovered and why they’re suing the Midwest sporting goods store.
