Minneapolis Public Schools officials say the district is headed for a budget crisis in the next two years.
State Rep. Jim Davnie (DFL-Minneapolis), the outgoing chair of the House Education Finance Committee, says the legislature could address some of the key budget challenges facing Minneapolis and other school districts.
He told MPR News host Cathy Wurzer that special education and English-as-a-second-language requirements are not adequately funded by the state.
“Working on those two issues alone would go a long way to helping stabilize Minneapolis' school funding and school funding [for] districts across the state,” he said. “Particularly the special education funding challenge, every traditional public school district in the state experiences that."
Davnie says the state also should consider changing the school funding formula to help schools across Minnesota that face declining enrollment.
