In December 2017, more than 140 leading evangelical women called on churches to go public with opposition to gender-based violence and harassment. Just like the viral #MeToo movement, influential evangelical women like Beth Moore and Lisa Sharon Harper used social media and the hashtag #SilenceIsNotSpiritual to draw attention to the cause. The group of women issued a statement that read, in part:
"There is no institution with greater capacity to create protected spaces for healing and restoration for survivors, as well as confession, repentance and rehabilitation for perpetrators..."
