MPR News Update

Good morning! While a few more storms are predicted for today, Minnesota should have a chance to dry out this weekend. Which is something southern Minnesota sorely needs. The city engineer in Willmar, Minn., is calling it close to a 1,000-year rain event — as much as 13 inches fell overnight in central and southern Minnesota. Problems are abating, but residents are faced with days or even weeks of cleanup and repair. | Forecast
Good morning! Some Minnesotans are waking up to more than a month's worth of rain this morning. The Twin Cities NWS has extended the flash flood watch for southern Minnesota until 1 a.m. Friday, and there are reports of street flooding and some wall collapses in Willmar and Olivia. Stay safe, and try to stay dry! | Live weather updates | Forecast
Good afternoon! Keep the weather radio handy across Minnesota today and especially overnight tonight in the Twin Cities. Heat and humidity peak over Minnesota with a moisture-rich atmosphere capable of producing thunderstorms with damaging winds and extreme rainfall spasms. | Forecast
Good morning! Another humid day in store with a high near 90 and a dew point in the 70s. There's also the potential for heavy rain tonight. Get the latest forecast here.
Good afternoon! Partly cloudy skies are expected until evening today with possible overnight rain, and rain predicted throughout Thursday. A shower of a different kind is also on its way. The annual Perseid meteor shower is back and will light up the skies this week, peaking late Thursday into Friday. And this year, we're in for an even better show than usual, thanks to an "outburst." | Forecast
Good afternoon! We start the week with another spectacular weather day with partly cloudy skies and temps in the low-80s. Perfect for outdoor activities like swimming, canoeing and lost prosthetic limb recovery. Really. A Wisconsin man has his prosthetic leg back after the lost limb was discovered sticking out of a beaver dam by two canoers. "I wasn't overly worried about it because I use my older model for fishing and hunting," Mark Warner, the leg's owner said. "It wasn't my everyday leg, to put it that way." | Forecast
Good morning! Mostly sunny with highs in the upper 70s to mid-80s. If you're flying Delta today, you may want to pack some extra patience. Maybe a lot of it. Delta flights around the world this morning have been indefinitely delayed due to "computer outage," the company says. A power outage in Atlanta around 2:30 a.m. was responsible for the problem, the company said in a statement. | Forecast
Good afternoon! Open your windows for some free air-conditioning. A cold front moved through Minnesota yesterday afternoon and evening bringing us cooler drier air. Saturday highs will be similar to today's, then temps will warm slightly on Sunday. Staying cool at home might be a favorable option to travel in the Twin Cities as I-35E, Hwy. 280 closures top weekend road woes. | Forecast
Good afternoon! High winds and early morning thunderstorms were powerful enough to knock out power, and knock down an iconic Minnesota landmark. When park owner Lois Moon came to work at the Paul Bunyan Land amusement park in the early morning, she found the massive Babe the Blue Ox statue on its side. With the help of a forklift and a borrowed crane Moon's crew was able to get Babe on his feet in less than an hour. Aside from a broken horn, she says Babe is largely unharmed. "He doesn't look too bad," she said. "We're going to have some cosmetic surgery going on here, but he's back on his feet." | Forecast
Good morning! Partly cloudy with a chance of showers and thunderstorms -- some may be severe. Highs in the upper 70s to mid-80s. Vikings fans are counting down the days until their team takes the field for the first time at the new U.S. Bank Stadium. They play their first preseason home game Aug. 28. But last night, the stadium got its first big test with a different kind of football -- a European soccer exhibition game. | Forecast
