MPR News Update

Good afternoon. Todd Waters, a "hobo" who proudly noted in 2012 that he's been arrested about 70 times jumping railroad cars out of St. Paul, has died. Or, as hoboes say, "he caught the Westbound." | NewsCut | Forecast
Good afternoon! A vast iceberg has broken off from the Larsen C ice shelf, scientists at the University of Swansea in Britain said. The "calving event" is a normal process so now the only question is: how big is it? | | Forecast
Good afternoon! If you were born after 1990, the Kermit the Frog you know best was probably voiced by Steve Whitmire. After 27 years, Whitmire has left his role giving life to the iconic green Muppet, and there's a frog in a lot of throats over the news. | NewsCut | Forecast
Good afternoon! A new poll from Pew Research shows the assault on the idea of higher education has finally connected with Republicans, who viewed it favorably just two years ago. But now? Fifty-eight percent of Republicans surveyed say colleges and universities "are having a negative effect on the way things are going in the country." | NewsCut | Forecast
Good afternoon! Is there anything a goat can't do? The labor lines are being drawn in Michigan where goats are being employed to eat poison ivy on the campus of Western Michigan University and AFSCME is not happy. | NewsCut | Forecast
Good morning! Partly cloudy with scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms northeast. Highs in the mid-70s to mid-80s. Now this is interesting -- a very determined (or confused) American eel apparently made its way from the North Atlantic Ocean all the way to Cottonwood Lake in southwest Minnesota. In the immortal words of our friend Dory the regal blue tang, "Just keep swimming." | Forecast | Updraft weather blog
Good afternoon! Last evening, Eric Saathoff, a teacher who lives in the Payne-Phalen neighborhood, demonstrated what he calls "the pedestrian experience" on St. Paul's Maryland Avenue. It's an attempt to test a solution to problems including one that's been discussed on MPR's news blog numerous times: when a car stops (well, we can dream, can't we?), the driver in the other lane doesn't and hits the crossing pedestrian. | NewsCut | Forecast
Good afternoon! If you live or commute around the metro area be warned, Interstate 35W will not be your friend this weekend. The Minnesota Department of Transportation will close the highway starting Friday night between Burnsville and Bloomington while crews remove bridges, do some paving and conduct other maintenance. | NewsCut | Forecast
Good morning! Showers and thunderstorms this morning throughout central and southeastern Minnesota. Scattered storms northeast and in central portions of the state this afternoon. Highs in the mid-80s to lower 90s. NPR yesterday went on a tweetstorm about liberty, government and freedom from tyranny. Some people got angry. They called the tweets trash. Were the leftists at NPR trying to undermine the nation and start a revolution? What could possibly explain this kind of talk on the Fourth of July? Just ... the Fourth of July. NPR was tweeting the Declaration of Independence. | Forecast | Updraft weather blog
Good morning! Mostly sunny with highs near 70s north, 80s south. Remember the ice bucket challenge from a few years ago? The Massachusetts man who inspired people around the world to dump buckets of ice water over their heads to raise millions of dollars for Lou Gehrig's disease research is back in the hospital. A Facebook post from the family of 32-year-old Pete Frates is asking for prayers and said he is at Massachusetts General Hospital "and battling this beast ALS like a Superhero." | Forecast | Updraft weather blog
