Some Minnesota outdoor groups are expressing frustration with two Ojibwe Indian bands in northern Minnesota that plan to reassert hunting and fishing rights they believe are protected by federal treaties from the 1800s.
The Leech Lake and White Earth Ojibwe Indian bands are gearing up to reassert hunting and fishing rights they say are guaranteed by 19th century treaties. The push by the northern Minnesota bands comes more than a decade after the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe won a similar claim in a landmark U.S. Supreme Court case.
More than 160 independent physicians and 40 clinics in Northeastern Minnesota and Northwestern Wisconsin are banding together to better compete with large hospital-based physician networks.
The declaration provides $11.1 million in federal disaster aid to state and local governments and non-profits for emergency work, building repairs, and other expenses.
