Homeless youth in the state -- whether in shelters, couch hopping, or on the streets -- struggle to get enough to eat. Food shelves and meal programs offer help, but some youth have to use their own survival skills to get by.
As summer travel season comes to a close, we note one positive trend on Minnesota's roadways -- fewer people are dying from motor vehicle crashes. So far, there've been 50 fewer traffic deaths compared to the same time last year, and that year broke a record for fewest fatalities.
The presence of corn rootworms is on the rise again, as the pests apparently are becoming resistant to genetically modified corn. One factor contributing to the resurgence of rootworm is a drop in farmer compliance with provisions calling for them to plant part of their land with non-genetically modified corn.
The Southwest Initiative Foundation has started a farmland retention program to solicit land donations from aging farmers. The farmers get a tax break, the foundation gets the land and pays taxes and the rental income helps pay for programs in the 18 counties of southwestern Minnesota.
With the lockout of about 1,300 American
Crystal Sugar Co. workers entering its second month and no
negotiations in sight, the company is ready to start the sugar beet harvest
season with inexperienced replacement workers.
The Duluth Airport Authority has received a $4.7 million grant from the FAA to continue work on a new terminal. It's part of the FAA's commitment to pay one-third of the project's $60 million cost.
