The Minnesota State Lottery had a record year. Sales totaled $520 million in the year that ended June 30, topping last year's record by $16 million. For the past five years, lottery sales have been climbing, even as sales of other forms of gambling have gone down.
A growing number of Minnesotans are competing in a little-known sport called cowboy mounted shooting, an activity that attracts participants who have a hankering for the Wild West. Cowboy mounted shooting combines horses, guns and split-second timing.
Minnesota wildlife officials say the state's turkey population has rebounded so efficiently that hunting applications for the fall season will no longer have to be distributed by a special application and lottery process.
