Classical music was once viewed as a whites-only pursuit in South Africa's apartheid system. Minnesota Orchestra leaders hope concerts over the next two weeks, including one in Soweto, can help bury those beliefs.
When Jack White performs Monday night at the Minneapolis Armory, fans will likely be surprised by what they hear. White does not use a set list. Instead, he takes his cues from the crowd to determine which songs to play and how to play them.
As a kid, Marin Alsop had two posters on the wall of her bedroom: The Beatles and Leonard Bernstein. She was so nervous to meet Bernstein as a young adult that she almost backed out, but she found out he was even greater in person that she could have imagined. Today is the 60th birthday of Kate Bush. She wrote her first big hit "Wuthering Heights" when she was 18 years old after watching the end of a documentary about Emily Bronte's novel of the same name. Some of the lyrics in the song are drawn directly from the novel.
"The song is about love and feeling free enough to dance in the street," said Martha Reeves. "You don't have to worry about cars hitting you. You don't have to worry about policemen coming and telling you you can't dance in the street."
