A teen driver faces criminal charges in connection with a September school bus crash in northern Minnesota that injured multiple students.
Svea Snickers, 19, of Alborn, was charged this week in St. Louis County District Court with two dozen counts. They include criminal vehicular operation resulting in substantial bodily harm, a felony.
The crash happened shortly before 8 a.m. Sept. 12 in Cherry Township, east of Hibbing. According to the criminal complaint, Snickers’ vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with the bus, which skidded and rolled into the ditch.
The complaint alleges Snickers had been using Snapchat on her phone shortly before the crash. There were no indications that she tried to use the brakes.
There were 21 students and a driver on the bus at the time. They sustained injuries ranging from scratches and bruises to broken bones and a concussion, according to the complaint. Snickers also was seriously injured.
Her first court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 30.
