Myon Burrell was sentenced Thursday in Hennepin County court after being convicted on charges of drug and weapon possession. His attorney plans to appeal.

Burrell was released from prison in 2020 after serving nearly 20 years. The state commuted his life sentence for a 2002 murder in Minneapolis after an investigation found flaws in his conviction.

In 2023, Robbinsdale police stopped Burrell for erratic driving and found various drugs and a loaded handgun in the car. His previous murder conviction bars Burrell from possessing weapons.

Judge Mark Kappelhoff found him guilty of weapons and drug charges in August. KARE 11 reports Kappelhoff on Thursday sentenced Burrell to five years in prison.

Burrell’s attorney is appealing the conviction. He’s arguing that the initial traffic stop was unlawful. Earlier in the case, a judge ruled that the stop was legal.

Burrell has two other pending cases from 2024 related to drug possession charges.

Supporters had filed letters asking the judge not to incarcerate Burrell again, noting his work helping other people recently released from incarceration.
