Authorities find body of missing Cannon Falls man

Cannon Falls police on Tuesday said a body found in the Cannon River over the weekend has been positively identified as that of a man missing since early last week.

Authorities said the body of 60-year-old Christopher Dobson was found in the river by searchers on Saturday. He was reported missing after he failed to return home from walking his dog on the evening of Dec. 2.

Police had said that tracks in the snow showed Dobson walked near the Cannon River, part of his normal routine. His dog was found at a neighbor’s home.

“Our condolences go out to Christopher’s family and friends,” Cannon Falls police said in the update. “We once again want to thank all the agencies and people that helped with the search to bring Christopher home.”

Authorities on Friday evening released more information about a Cannon Falls man who has been missing since Monday night.

The Cannon Falls Police Department and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension identified the missing man as 60-year-old Christopher Dobson. He was reported missing just after 8 p.m. Monday, after taking his dog out for a walk in the woods near his home on the northeast side of the city.

“Foot tracks show he left the house on a wooded trail toward the Cannon River with his dog, part of his normal routine,” Friday’s update stated. “There were foot tracks found on the ice at river’s edge and the dog was found wet at the neighbor's house.”

Dobson’s vehicle was found at his home.

A search started Monday night, and continued Tuesday with personnel from more than a dozen agencies.

“A thorough search was conducted in the wooded areas around the residence and along the Cannon River using ground personnel, aerial drones and amphibious drones during the daylight hours,” Cannon Falls police reported in an update Tuesday night. “This was searching previously searched areas again as well as additional new areas.”

Authorities had halted the search due to poor weather conditions on Wednesday, with plans to resume on Thursday.

Authorities have warned of dangerous ice conditions along the Cannon River. They asked residents near the river in Cannon Falls to check their property, including sheds and outbuildings. And they asked hunters with trail cameras in the area to check for photos or video that might help the investigation.

Friday’s update asked for the public’s help in locating Dobson. He’s described as 5 feet, 9 inches tall and 165 pounds with gray hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing a long, dark jacket.

Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to contact the Cannon Falls Police Department at (507) 263-2278.
