Search fails to locate Cannon Falls man missing since Monday night

An extensive search has so far failed to locate a Cannon Falls man missing since Monday night.

Cannon Falls police said a 60-year-old man took his dog for a walk in the woods near the Cannon River on the northeast side of the city and didn’t return. He was reported missing just after 8 p.m. Monday.

Search teams were out Monday night and were able to follow the man’s footprints in the snow in the woods and along the river, but did not located him.

Personnel from more than a dozen agencies were back out on Tuesday.

“A through search was conducted in the wooded areas around the residence and along the Cannon River using ground personnel, aerial drones and amphibious drones during the daylight hours,” Cannon Falls police reported in an update Tuesday night. “This was searching previously searched areas again as well as additional new areas.”

Authorities said they do not plan to search on Wednesday due to the forecasted high winds and falling temperatures, and will instead use the day for planning next steps. The search will resume on Thursday if weather allows.

Cannon Falls police are asking people to not attempt their own search, given the weather forecast and dangerous ice conditions along the Cannon River. But they are asking residents near the river in Cannon Falls to check their property, including sheds and outbuildings. And they’re asking hunters with trail cameras in the area to check for photos or video that might help the investigation.

Authorities have not released the missing man’s name.
