The Minnesota DFL Party kept its majority in the state Senate after former Sen. Ann Stewart Johnson won a special election in the western Twin Cities suburbs.

Stewart Johnson claimed the single empty seat left by U.S. Rep.-Elect Dr. Kelly Morrison, who resigned in June to seek national office. The Minnesota State House of Representatives, however, appears to be in a 67-67 split, pending two mandatory recounts.

DFL Sen. Nicole Mitchell, who represents Woodbury, is also in criminal court proceedings on burglary charges; Republicans have called for her resignation.

Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson, R-East Grand Forks, joined MPR News Host Cathy Wurzer on Wednesday morning to talk about the 2024 election results, the tightening DFL trifecta, Republican voter turnout and bipartisan cooperation at the state level.
