Today in Fargo-Moorhead: Wintry weather, foster care college funding in limbo

We are likely to get snow Thursday night.

A winter weather advisory is in effect from 4 p.m. Thursday to 7 a.m. Friday for portions of southeast North Dakota. Slippery roads and 2 to 6 inches of snow could impact travel.

A hazardous weather outlook due to accumulating snow is in effect into Thursday night. Heavy falling snow could “greatly” reduce visibility, the National Weather Service said.

Friday’s high is 33 degrees. More snow over the weekend and into Monday is expected, with highs hovering near 30.

Wilder Research’s 2023 Minnesota Homeless Study found a slight decrease in those experiencing homelessness from 2018.

But the decline “masks year-over-year fluctuations in homelessness particularly due to the COVID-19 pandemic and an unprecedented funding for rental and housing assistance,” researchers said. The count was not conducted in 2021.

Nia Dyer’s dream of graduating from Minnesota State University Moorhead next year is on the line.

She’s one of about 645 students receiving state aid to pay for college through the Fostering Independence Grant program — the first of its kind in the nation to cover not only tuition but full cost of attendance of college for Minnesotans who have been in foster care.

But 40 percent of recipients in the program, often called FIG, are in danger of losing their funding next year because of a $5 million budget shortfall, MPR News reporter Nicole Ki found.

A local music showcase is Saturday, featuring college bands at the Aquarium.
