Friday and Saturday will be critical in the fight against the large Greenwood Fire in northeastern Minnesota, according to retired University of Minnesota climatologist and meteorologist Mark Seeley.

He told MPR News host Cathy Wurzer that a front moving across the state could help firefighters if it brings substantial rain, but winds from the south are expected to remain strong throughout Friday, and change direction Saturday.

“It'll be a wind shift, but the gusts are still going to be worrisome because they will be between 20 and 30 miles an hour, and all of that's not really going to calm down until probably Saturday night,” Seeley said.

Seeley talked with MPR News host Cathy Wurzer about conditions near the Greenwood Fire — and Minnesota’s expanding drought — in their weekly weather chat.
