It could be many months before we learn the results of the Justice Department’s investigation into Minneapolis police. U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland announced the probe last week, after former officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of murder and manslaughter in the killing of George Floyd.
Investigators will be looking for any patterns of unlawful policing by Minneapolis police. If they find evidence of misconduct, it could lead to a so-called consent decree, which would spell out changes to the department’s policies and practices.
While Minneapolis police is the latest subject of such a probe, it is not the first. Police in cities like New Orleans, Baltimore and Chicago have been the subject of similar Justice Department investigations.
