At state Capitol, top GOP lawmakers express support for DOJ probe

Leading Republican lawmakers involved in law enforcement policy at the state legislature are expressing support for the Justice Department’s investigation into the Minneapolis Police Department.

Attorney General Merrick Garland announced the probe on Wednesday, less than 24 hours after a guilty verdict was delivered in the case of former officer Derek Chauvin.

Since then, state Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka (R-East Gull Lake) and state Sen. Warren Limmer (R-Maple Grove), chair of the Senate Judiciary and Public Safety Committee, have issued a joint statement backing the move.

An early advocate for the probe was another member of the Senate Judiciary and Public Safety Committee, Sen. Bill Ingebrigtsen (R-Alexandria), who himself is a former Douglas County sheriff. MPR News host Cathy Wurzer talked with Sen. Ingebrigtsen for more on the investigation.
