Shifting images of peace and chaos filled the Twin Cities landscape Thursday on a third day of protests over the death of George Floyd.
A mostly peaceful crowd marched in the early evening in downtown Minneapolis. Looting continued in St. Paul’s Midway neighborhood.
But after 9 p.m., fire and tear gas had found their way back to Minneapolis.

Across the Mississippi River, burglaries and vandalism were reported in St. Paul’s Midway, Sun Ray and Cathedral Hill neighborhoods as violent protesters and looters spilled into the city.
Police Chief Todd Axtell called looting “unprecedented,” and the city’s mayor, Melvin Carter, asked people to remain home and stay away from areas where violent protests took place.
“We won’t tolerate people being injured in this city. We won’t tolerate buildings being burned down,” Axtell said.
