The coronavirus outbreak brought the Girl Scout cookie selling season to a screeching halt.

Left with unsold inventory, some Minnesota Girl Scouts are now inviting people to donate those cookies to first responders and community groups.

"There are thousands of girls who are kind of learning how to pivot when a small business is impacted," said Tish Bolger, CEO of the Girl Scouts Council of Minnesota and Wisconsin River Valleys. "We have a ton of inventory, and we have launched Cookies for a Cause."

That program allows people to purchase cookies through the Girl Scout River Valleys website.

"Those cookies will then be safely delivered to food shelves, police and fire departments, first responders, school nutrition programs, and really anybody who is responding to the COVID-19 crisis," Bolger said.

Proceeds from the sales support Girl Scout troop activities for the coming year. Bolger said Girl Scouts are continuing to meet online and earn badges.

Bolger said the unexpected change is teaching scouts important entrepreneurial lessons about running small businesses that benefit others.

And yes, she said — you can also order cookies to be shipped directly to your home.
