Fall is just around the corner, but road construction is still in full swing. Some major freeways are poised to close this weekend in the Twin Cities.
Starting at 9 p.m. Friday, westbound Interstate 494 near Mendota Heights closes between Interstate 35E and Minnesota Highway 5, near Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. It will reopen before the start of the Monday morning rush hour.
The shutdown is part of a major overhaul for the road that includes bridge repair and drainage upgrades. Crews are installing a pipe under the road.
In the north metro, Interstate 694 is closing in both directions between Snelling Avenue and Rice Street so crews can take down the old Rice Street bridge over the interstate.
That closure begins Friday at 10 p.m. It’s set to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation has all the closures posted on its website for the Twin Cities metro and across Minnesota.
