St. Paul police investigate fatal shooting in Battle Creek neighborhood

St. Paul police continue to investigate the fatal shooting of a man early Saturday in the city's Battle Creek neighborhood.

It's the 16th homicide in St. Paul in 2019. As of Saturday morning, 108 people had been injured by gunfire in the city this year — including eight in the past week. That's up from 90 people injured by gunfire in St. Paul through the end of August last year.

"I don't know if frustrating is a strong enough word," said police spokesman Sgt. Mike Ernster. "I might even say for officers on the street, it'd be infuriating. One shooting is too many; 108 is mind-boggling, to have that many people shot in St. Paul."

Saturday's shooting was reported just after 1 a.m. Police received multiple reports of shots fired in the 2100 block of Glenridge Avenue.

Officers arrived at the scene to find evidence of a shooting but no victim. They later learned the man had been taken to Regions Hospital in a private vehicle; he died shortly after arriving at the hospital.

No one had been arrested in the case as of Saturday evening, and the man's name has not been officially released. Police have not released information on what might have led up to the shooting.

Ernster said investigators have talked to the people who brought the victim to the hospital.

He said the shootings this year are causing trauma in all parts of the community.

"In this incident we're talking about Battle Creek. The other day we were talking about North End. Before that we were talking about Midway, Midway Parkway and Snelling," he said. "There's miles in between there; it spans our whole city. It can be everywhere, and to have everybody feeling that same feeling is disheartening."

Anyone with information about Saturday's homicide — or any shooting incident in the city — is asked to contact police.
