If conditions are right in the next week or so, two areas in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness will go up in flames – by design.
The prescribed burns are intended to clear out dead trees that were toppled in the massive blowdown 20 years ago. The two areas included are around Trout Lake, just west of Ely, and Prairie Portage, between Basswood and Sucker Lakes.
MPR News host Cathy Wurzer talked with Gus Smith about what to expect from the burns. Smith is a district ranger with the National Forest Service, based in Ely.
