Hate crimes in the United States rose by just under 5 percent last year. Last year's stats aren't a fluke; they are in-line with a larger national trend that shows hate crimes have nearly tripled over the span of the last eight years.
A recent report from the FBI shows that the majority of those crimes were committed by right wing extremists, over half of those crimes were related to race or "perceived ethnicity" and just over 20 percent were related to religion. MPR News guest host Jana Shortal talked to BuzzFeed News' Hannah Allam and David Neiwert, author of "Alt-America: The Rise of the Radical Right in the Age of Trump."
