A while back it was hard to escape ads for what they call the "purple pill."

Its commercial name is Prilosec, the popular drug that's part of a class known as "proton pump inhibitors," which are used to treat acid reflux and other stomach problems.

Now there are concerns about long-term use of PPIs, including possible links to kidney disease and dementia.

MPR News regular medical analyst Dr. Jon Hallberg joined host Tom Crann to talk more about how those purple pills work, and what we're learning about them.
