Donald Trump's disparaging comments about Sen. John McCain's service to the country brought swift rebukes from nearly the entire 2016 field of GOP candidates running for president. But it also raises the question as to why they take issue with Trump on this comment, but not over other offensive and untrue comments he made about Mexicans.
“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”
— Donald Trump, presidential announcement speech, June 16, 2015
"Insult Mexicans, you get a slow and tepid response. Insult McCain, a fast and furious response. It's clear to Latinos and their allies who is 'them' and who is 'us'." immigration activist Frank Sharry wrote in an email to Bloomberg's Francis Wilkerson.

Can Trump insult his way to the White House? His anger connects with a block of Republican voters, writes Keith Koffler in Politico.
"Trump, who seems perpetually angry, is an expression of the angst of conservatives who believe the United States has gotten so deep into a mess that a little extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice. What they adore about Trump is that he is a pugilist who has emerged at a time when someone needs to start throwing punches."
