Meet Michael Olson
Micheal Olson is deputy digital managing editor for MPR News. His expertise spans digital transformation, multimedia storytelling and public media strategy. He currently spearheads engagement and digital initiatives for MPR News, managing a diverse team of editors, reporters and producers to reach broader and more diverse audiences.
Michael’s leadership has driven the highest social media engagement for MPR News and supported record-breaking digital audiences, particularly during critical events such as the George Floyd protests and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Michael’s introduction to journalism and radio started in Ely while working for Charles Kuralt at End of the Road Radio WELY covering high school sports, elections and anything folks in town seemed curious about. Now a seasoned media professional with extensive experience in leading digital strategies for major public radio organizations, he has held multiple editorial positions at MPR, NPR and KUT News, where he managed news coverage, audience engagement and cross-platform collaboration.
Michael's work has contributed to numerous awards, including a Peabody Award and national Edward R. Murrow awards. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Oregon. When not in the office, he is most likely playing music or outside on a bike, hiking or paddling with friends and family.
