New GOP ad centers on state’s surplus

The Republican Party of Minnesota is planning to spend at least $20,000 on a round of TV ads aimed at building support to use the state's budget surplus to cut taxes.

At least two Twin Cities broadcast stations will feature the ads: CBS affiliate WCCO and Fox affiliate KMSP, according to documents on the Federal Communications Commission website and provided by the stations.

The theme of the campaign is "Give it Back," a reference to tax cuts Republicans are seeking in light of the state's nearly $1.9 billion surplus.

So far, it's not clear what Republicans have in mind for tax cuts.

But Republican legislators also want spend some of the surplus money on nursing home funding, transportation and education.

State Republican Party officials are expected to hold a press conference Tuesday to outline their campaign.
