As Major League Soccer prepares for Sunday's championship game between the LA Galaxy and New England Revolution in California, discussions of a possible league expansion to Minnesota continue.

League officials will be meeting this weekend to talk about the future of top level U.S. soccer.

The talks come as two potential ownership groups are vying for a team in Minneapolis. They include the Minnesota Vikings owners, who want to host a team in their new stadium, and the ownership of Minnesota United, the second-tier pro soccer team that plays in Blaine.

Minnesota United and the owners of the Twins and Timberwolves are looking at a downtown Minneapolis site for a new soccer stadium.

MLS commissioner Don Garber said in a webcast that league officials are hesitant about outdoor soccer in Minneapolis.

"The weather issues we have I believe are insurmountable until we start building domes and start heating our stadiums," Garber said. "That is an unfortunate reality that we have to manage to."

Vikings owners say they have a new plan to accommodate soccer in their stadium.
