It was on July 3 in 1968 that David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash sang together for the first time. It was at a party at Joni Mitchell's house. The song was "You Don't Have To Cry." We've posted a later performance of video, below.
The three improvised the song together, and it dawned on them quickly that they liked the vocal chemistry they had. Less than a year later, they released the song we played on Morning Edition's music segment today, "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes."
Crosby, Stills and Nash are still playing together, and they're on tour this year. But sadly for Minnesotans, their closest stop will be Highland Park, Illinois on July 19.
