State Rep. Jim Abeler of Anoka says he’s the only Republican candidate with the experience to challenge Sen. Al Franken in November.
The nation’s problems “won’t be solved with free beer or a shock-and-awe fireworks shows,” Abeler said, making jabs at the other candidates including Mike McFadden who has a permit to set off fireworks during his speech to delegates.
“You already know that I’ve cut billions out of the state budget and that I know how to cut a trillion out of the federal budget,” Abeler said referring to his efforts on the House’s health finance committee to trim spending.
He also touted his expertise on health care issues.

While Abeler has said he disagrees with the Affordable Care Act, he hasn’t always walked the party line on healthcare issues. For instance, he said he would work with Democrats to set up the state’s health insurance exchange.
Abeler has left the door open as to whether he will abide by the party’s endorsement.
Like his opponents, he stressed party unity.
“Come Nov. 4, we must stick together to win this statewide race,” Abeler said.
As Abeler left the stage, a handful of delegates yelled, “Abide by the endorsement!”
After Abeler spoke, Phillip Parrish, a Navy reservist, took the stage. He’s also seeking to unseat Franken in the general election.
Parrish said one of his core values is smaller government.
“Stop believing there is someone better suited to make your life’s choices,” he told the crowd.
